Blessings and Gratitude
Umm Junayd

Allaah says:

"Whatever blessings you enjoy are from Allaah, and when touched by distress, He is the One to Whom you cry for help." [16:53]

As usual I like to make calls to sisters who are dear to me to see how they're keeping and to of course gain something beneficial and as always I love to call one sister in particular because I never cease to gain something from her mashaa`Allaah. So there I was I dialled her number and there came the all familiar dial tone...

... However, when she answered the phone I knew something was wrong. I didn't ask her straight away as I knew too well that if something was wrong it'll pop up in our conversation - and no doubt it did. She revealed to me that she didn't have anything at home to feed her children and she wanted to pop out to quickly get something - then suddenly my adhaan clock vibrates the soothing sound of the call to prayer as it had reached Maghrib. Of course we know that this is a time to bring your children in and lock your doors, so there went her chance to quickly pop out with her children to try to get dinner.

When I had finished on the phone I myself began to cook dinner and then this hadeeth ran through my head, making me break out in beads of sweat:

'He who eats his fill while his neighbour goes without food is not a believer.'

SubhaanAllaah... my heart began to tremble and I almost immediately rang her back:

"Did you manage to get anything for the children to eat?" I asked.
"Yes, I got some Jamaican Cake," she replied.
"Thatfs not food! You've got babies, they need to eat!" I exclaimed.
"Alhamdulillaah... we've just had it with water and im trying to get them ready for bed," she said.

SubhaanAllaah... although all she had to feed her babies was some cake, she was grateful because it's better than nothing at all... She simply relies on Allaah. This is the main lesson to be gained from this story and you can probably see why I love this sister so dearly for the sake of Allaah. You can also see why I added that ayah at the beginning - all our blessings are from Allaah [yes, even cake!] and on Him should we rely!

May Allaah allow for us all to be grateful slaves, for there's a blessing in everything, we are simply so blind to see them.
