Cupping is for Everyone!

Bismillaahi was-salaatu was-salaamu 'alaa Rasoolillaah. Wa ba'd:

Sometime before 'Eid-ul-Adha 1427, Allaah made it possible for me to attend a workshop where I learnt the art of cupping. I say 'art' because cupping is a beautiful procedure for many reasons:

1. It was a practise of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and one which he recommended to his followers.

2. It rids the body of toxins, bad blood and body fluids that have been stagnant within our body for years on end and it also brings blood flow to stagnant muscles and skin.

3. It paves way for the body to recuperate and regenerate from minor or major illnesses such as colds, flu, small knocks and falls.

4. It has no side-effects, unlike common medical treatments nowadays.

5. It's a great way to detox the body, even if you feel healthy and well.

Cupping, in the way the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) used to have it done, is the process of lifting the skin lightly with a suction mechanism, pricking the skin and letting blood out with the same suction vacuum. The suction vacuum can be achieved in various ways and it differs from country to culture. For example, the Chinese use glass cups and a flame to achieve the suction vacuum and in Africa, they are known to use the horns of animals or bamboo sticks. The method I use is by way of a suction pump and disposable plastic cups as this allows me to control the suction vacuum to suit the patient.

I had always wanted to learn how to perform cupping, especially when my husband had it done and I was unable to find a sister to do it for me. I realised that there is a great need for sisters not only to learn how to perform cupping, but also to have it done on them. Unfortunately, there seems to be a misconception regarding cupping; namely that men should get it done, but women shouldn't because they have menstrual cycles. I too was of this opinion before I spoke to a sister who is a nurse – she soon cleared this misconceived notion.

The menstrual blood that is released from a woman's body comes from the womb - when a released egg is not fertilised - and does not come from our arteries or veins, therefore, the 'bad blood' within our system and toxins in our organs are not released. Hence there is a great necessity to have cupping done, especially during these current times when our food is loaded with artificial flavourings, colours, preservatives and other junk which we cannot even pronounce!

There have been many stories of people being cured, by Allaah's Will, from many illnesses and ailments after having cupping done and some seem farfetched, however after performing cupping on two sisters who had leg-related problems, I was in absolute gratitude to Allaah for this avenue of alternative health treatment. Both sisters felt immediate relief after the treatment and were quite surprised by the swiftness in their relief. All praise is due to Allaah as He is Ash-Shaafee` (The Curer).

I would encourage all brothers and sisters to have cupping done, whether they feel ill or not; whether they have ailments or not. Cupping has so many hidden benefits which can aid better general health, so don't feel that it's 'not for you'. Cupping is for everyone!

Love cupping, a great sunnah in need of a even greater revival.. so you up for that ;)

Inshallah will see you soon! :)

Assalaamu 'alaikunna akhawaat.

Alia, you're most welcome - just ties in what I was saying on your blog.

Suhaa Yes, go research! and.. go learn. It's so beneficial - am I sounding like a broken record?

With regards to cupping for hearing loss - I'm sure there is an accupoint (a point on the body), that could be cupped for benefit. However, I've no specific knowledge about that... yet. Ask me next month inshaa`Allaah - I may be able to provide some help. But, the 'sunnah spot' on the back/ bottom of the neck is central to helping the relief of various ailments.

Bint. Y. Yes, yes.. I'm all up for it. We're going to be a trio inshaa`Allaah. Let's get some dosh and our certs. Looking forward to meeting you too, inshaa`Allaah!

Assalaam alaikum

I personally have been amazed at the benefits of cupping. I learned about it here in Egypt. So far I've only performed it on myself, but I'd love to feel confident enough to do it for other sisters. I've recommended it to anyone with an illness (even non muslims). As far as side effects, I've found you must rest afterwards because it makes you tired (sisters with more experience have mentioned this to me also. Wassalaam

Wa 'alaikumus-salaam Umasiya,

I wouldn't call the tired feeling a 'side-effect' persay, but yes, you should take things easy when you have cupping done. Sisters who travel to me to have it done do say that they felt tired when they got home, especially because they were travelling.

I am just wondering where you attended the class?

assalamu alaikum sisters

My husband does cupping and massage and has many people who come to him for it. If you know any men who want cupping done they can email mobilehejama@gmail.com and he will get back to them. He will come to your house and do it for you.

Assalaamu 'alaikum.

I'm overwhelmed with the comments on this post... tabaarakAllaah.

Okay, from the top:

'Me': I'm based in London. If you're ever planning to come down to London, send me an email, inshaa`Allaah.

Fawsia: My husband had cupping done by a brother. I'll try to get the number for you inshaa`Allaah.

Jamila: I've attended the infamous Hijamah workshops that are regularly run in London. That was what I like to call my 'calling' to cupping. I have since then attended a workshop conducted Ilkay Zihni Chirali - THE best known medically certified person to give cupping courses. Mashaa`Allaah, his course was more thorough that I had imagined it would be, and we got to do 'real' cupping with the flame, alhamdulillaah (and we were given a certificate at the end too!).

I have a medical degree and, like you I have also attended Ilkay Chiralis course as well as a workshop in Birmingham. I am just starting out doing hijama on sisters and helping to revive this beautiful sunnah.

As Salaamu Alaikum Sis:

How much blood is actually released by the cupping?

17 Umm Junayd said on January 20, 2008 6:53 PM:

Assalaamu 'alaikum Sis Safiyyah.

Great to see you around this side of cyberland!

The amount of blood cannot really be determined beforehand as some people bleed more than others. I've had patients who do not bleed at all despite the cuts, and there are some who bleed quite a lot and require the cup to be emptied and then re-applied.

So, there's no definite answer on the amount of blood that is released. That's probably not a very reassuring answer for anyone hoping to have cupping done, but it really differs from person to person.

I wanted to know if cupping would help my daughter fatimah. She has vitiligo. Skin condition when the skin looses it pigmentation. I believe it has a lot to do with the imune system. Could you shed a light to this
