Do you REALLY know?
Archived under Knowledge .
Imagine yourself in a classroom at an Islamic institute. Mashaa`Allaah, you've been a Muslim for several years and you've studied tawheed many times. Your class instructor walks into the room and says:
"Today, we're going to do a lesson on tawheed."
You aren't too enthusiastic - no one likes to be in a class 'learning' what they already know, do they?
The instructor asks: "Oh Muhammad (or Faatima for you sisters out there!), what is tawheed?"
You sit up straight and say: "To believe that Allaah is One." How accurate do you think this statement is?
Read on to find out!
Tawheed comes from the Arabic verb wahhada, which means to ascribe unity to something. Seems simple enough. However, this is the linguistic meaning of the verb wahhada - what is the linguistic meaning of tawheed, then?
Tawheed is a verbal noun of ascribing unity to something - Islamically, tawheed does not mean that Allaah is One. Logically, if one thought about this often quoted definition of tawheed, it actually holds very little weight. Tawheed is the belief that Allaah is One - One in what sense?
The correct Islamic definition of tawheed refers to the believe that Allaah is One and Unique in three things:
1. His Lordship
2. His Names & Attributes
3. His Right to be worshipped
Examine this new definition a little closer and you will realise that it holds much more weight than simply stating that Allaah is One.
This is just a small segment from a series of entries that I will be posting about the concept of tawheed, inshaa`Allaah. All good is from Allaah alone, and all mistakes are from myself.
Wa subhaanak Allaahumma wa bihamdik. Ash-hadu al-laa illaaha illa ant. Astaghfiruka, wa atoobu ilayk.

Your Thoughts
Assalamualaikum
I personally equate Tawheed with the Oneness of Allah...if you asked me how; yeah I would have definitely replied that Allah is One and none should be associated with him.
I believe too many of us Muslims have a simplistic understanding of the religion. If they knew more they would realize the gem Allah has blessed them with.
Thanks for this piece. May Allah put more understanding in our hearts with it and may He let you share more of it; wherever they're coming from :)
