He Moved On

Bismillaahi was-salaatu was-salaamu 'alaa Rasoolillaah. Wa ba'd:

News reached us yesterday that my husband's grandfather passed on to the life in the barzakh - inna lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raaji'oon.

I had never met him, but it felt as though my own grandfather had passed away and I was truly saddened by the news. It got me reflecting on my own life and death (as the news of death seems to do to us), but I also reflected on my husband's reaction to it all.

1. He called me on my mobile, as he does everyday from work, with his usual chatty, bouncy mood (mashaa`Allaah) - nothing strange there, or was there?
2. He says "Habeeb, make du'aa, granddad's passed away" - and it didn't sound as though he'd been crying or anything.
3. In my futile attempt to try to understand the way he was feeling, I asked: "You feel sad, right?" (dumb question!) and his response was: "Well, it happens. When it comes we cannot stop it. Just make du'aa for him 'cos they're going to be placing him in his grave soon". Wow. Mashaa`Allaah. When my grandmother passed away last year I was.. yaa Allaah.. I was bawling my eyes out; uncontrollably - really, it wasn't easy for me to come to terms with.

Don't get me wrong, my husband was shocked and saddened by the news (who wouldn't be?), but his reaction truly showed his strength emotionally and spiritually. After all, death is certain and none can escape it, but for most of us it's a 'surreal fact' that we can't get to grips with - especially when it's someone we know and love.

Last night, he sat on the bed and was muttering "That's it. Granddadfs gone. That's the life of this world..." and other inaudible words. It then occurred to me how much it did hit him, but inshaa`Allaah, it'll prove to strengthen him in eemaan.

May Allaah have Mercy upon my husband's grandfather; make his grave a spacious one and protect him from the punishment of the grave. May Allaah forgive him of his sins, mistakes and shortcomings and reward him much for his goodness, aameen.

Updated to Add: The following hadeeth may be of comfort to those who have lost a loved one.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allaah (sallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: Allaah says: My faithful servant's reward from Me, if I have taken to Me his best friend from amongst the inhabitants of the world and he has then borne it patiently for My sake, shall be nothing less than Paradise. [It was related by al-Bukhaaree & recorded in Hadeeth Qudsi: 29]

Wa 'alaikumus-salaam sis!

Call me weird but I actually screamed with joy when I saw your comment. So good to hear from you sis (and to finally know where you're 'moving' to).
