Homeschooling & Home: Hearts and Charts
Archived under Homeschooling .
This tip came about while speaking to a sister who has young children, but it is not limited to those homeschool; it can also be used as a simple reward and discipline system at home.
Objectives: Children to learn that good actions and deeds come with rewards and bad actions and deeds come with serious consequences.
Task:
1. Cut two heart shapes for each child - one on white paper and the other on red paper.
2. Write each child's name clearly in thick bold letters in the middle of each heart.
3. Laminate or use the clear sticky tape to 'laminate' each heart.
4. Mount all hearts on a big sheet of black paper.
5. Cut several small circles in black paper and several on gold or yellow paper.
Use the white heart to signify the good heart and the red heart to signify the bad. When the child does something displeasing, place a black spot on the red heart. When the child does something good, place a gold/ yellow spot on the white heart.
You can setup a system whereby, if a certain number of black spots are accumulated, there'll be serious consequences (maybe the delay of a fun time; maybe 'go to be early'; maybe shorten break time etc. See what works best for you. On the other hand, if a certain number of gold/ yellow spots are accumulated, give the child a treat - maybe take him/ her to the park; give an extended lunch time etc.
Alternatively, you can create a star chart and use the red heart system with them also.
This is a good way for them to come to grips with the good deeds = rewards and bad deeds = bad consequences. Also, present them with this hadeeth:
Allaah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When a believer sins there is a black spot on his heart, and if he repents and asks pardon his heart is polished; but if he does more it increases till it gains the ascendancy over his heart. That is the rust mentioned by Allaah Most High, 'Nay, but what they were committing has spread like rust over their hearts'." [Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it]
Try it out!
