Jannah Cannot Be Inherited

Bismillaahi was-salaatu was-salaamu 'alaa Rasoolillaah. Wa ba'd:

How many times have I heard:

"My father's an Imaam!"

and statements like it, yet the one making the claim - as true as it may be (and Allaah Knows Best) - is someone immersed in activities displeasing to Allaah ta'aala.

What then does the statement imply? Does it mean that one will be acquitted from the terrors of the Day of Standing just because one's father is an Imaam? Does it mean that one's pens are lifted because one's parents are from amongst the righteous? Does it mean that one will be granted Jannah because of one's lineage or because one's family is known to be worshippers of Allaah? No doubt, those who believe this and act in accordance to such beliefs are immersed in nothing but deception. Let's look at this hadeeth when the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) was ordering members of his family to obey Allaah ta'aala:

The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) got up when the Verse: "And warn your tribe of near kindred..." (26.214) was revealed and said, "O Quraish people! (or he said a similar word) Buy yourselves! I cannot save you from Allah (if you disobey Him). O Bani Abu Manaf! I cannot save you from Allah (if you disobey Him). O 'Abbas! The son of 'Abdul Muttalib! I cannot save you from Allah (if you disobey Him). O Safiya, (the aunt of Allah's Apostle)! I cannot save you from Allah (if you disobey Him). O Fatima, the daughter of Muhammad ! Ask what you wish from my property, but I cannot save you from Allah (if you disobey Him)." (Reported in Saheeh al-Bukhaaree - narrated by Abu Hurayrah)

Furthermore, our Lord the Most High has said in soorah at-Tahreem (66): 10

"Allaah sets forth and example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut. They were under two of Our righteous servants, but they betrayed them. In no way could their husbands protect them from Allah. Both of them were told: "Enter the fire, along with those who enter."

Do weed need another example? Well then look at the state in which Abu Taalib departed from this world: a disbeliever despite the fact that he had a nephew (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) who was a Prophet much loved by Allaah. Will his relation to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) avail him on the Day of Recompense? Will he be granted Jannah because of this? No, for Jannah is not inherited.

May Allaah allow us to be amongst those who strive for Jannah and not expect it to be placed in our hands, aameen.

Subhaanak Allaahumma wa bihamdik. Ash-hadu al-laa illaaha illa ant. Astaghfiruka, wa atoobu ilayk.
