Assalaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh

A post on Bint Adam's blog provoked this entry.

I've been struggling with my memorisation for a while now -- i think ever since i stopped being taught at my local madrasah and became a teacher there instead - Allaahu a'lam.

Anyhow, Im currently struggling with Soorah al-Jinn [I started this soorah a few days into Ramadhaan and I'm still on it!!] and I wanna at least get up to Soorah Nooh by the beginning of '05 [am i being a little too ambitious??]

So, who's gonna help me out? A sister has already offered to help. But it's nice to have a group of us. Please Note: Only sisters need apply, I will take no offerings from brothers [thanx, but no thanx - i'm sure you understand].
We could start a paltalk group.. or even better call one another. Hm.. which would mean that non-UK sisters would be restricted. But we'll think about that later, inshaa`Allaah.

Do YOU wanna help me [and i'll help you] inshaa`Allaah?? Let me know!

wassalaamu 'alaikum

Assalamu alaykum ukhti...
first time at your website, but i think you've got a very good idea infact when i read bint adams blog i felt the same too so i would like to help out too.
by the way some one told me, during their persuit in memorising the quran, the best time was after fajr each day. and you dont have to do many a day just 1 to 3 ayahs per day depending on your speed. once you get very confident you move to five ayahs and then to a page. thats how that person did it when they wanted to memorise the quran and Insha ALlah it will work. they also said that once you like finish one whole juz, it gets very easy to go on coz you tend to find that some of the sentences repeat. if you are that keen the best place to start is from the last juz.. the importrant thing is not 2 leave it there, but keep readin the surahs over and over again so tht you dont forget it, as some of us think "ok, im over and done with that one, Alhamdulillah" and never go back and do a recap..
Insha Allah i should try that too.
but thats cool your idea sounds great.

Assalaamu 'alaikum,

I have no idea how people are able to memorise a page at a time. Keeping in what you already know is a mission and a half too.

Anyhow, I hope Allah grants you increase in what you know.

Bint Ahmed: Jazaakillaah khairaa for the suggestion and for the comment. It's much appreciated. I've now realised how important my revision of Juzz 'Amma is.. and i had to learn the hard way. It's mainly about listening to that which I already know [because you always pick up a mistake] and listening to that which you are learning.

Borbus: Thanks for your comment. I'm not boasting in any way, but I was able to memorise 10 aayaat a day after Fajr. Now it's kinda gone down to 5 aayaat [if that at times!]... could be due to the childbirth. Allaah knows best.

Assalaamu 'alaikum,

I found something that maybe of interest to you:

It has been reported by Tirmidhi, Hakim and others that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) reports that he was once in the company of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) when Sayyiduna Ali (Allah be pleased him) came in and said, "O Messenger of Allah, you are dearer to me than my father and mother. I try to memorize the Qur'an but cannot do so as it vanishes from my memory.h

The Messenger of Allah said, "Shall I tell you of a method which will benefit you as well as those to whom it is conveyed by you? You will then be able to retain whatever you learn."

At the request of Sayyiduna Ali, the Messenger of Allah said, "When the night preceding Friday comes, rise up in its last third portion, if possible, for that would be excellent. This is the best part of the night as this is the time that Prophet Yaqub (peace be upon him) had been waiting when he had said to his sons that he would made me Prophet that the acceptance of a believer's prayer will never be missed."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas reports that hardly five or seven Fridays passed when Sayyiduna Ali came to the Messenger of Allah and said, "Previously I used to learn about four ayahs (verses) but I was not able to retain them and now I learn about forty and I can remember them as clearly as if I have the Qur'an open before me. Previously when I heard a Hadith and then repeated it, I could not retain it and now I hear Ahadith and when I narrate them to others I do not miss a single word."

If that is beneficial to you, then please feel free to make du'a for me. :) If you do, you could mention me being a better speaker in my job interviews, as I'm getting rejections, alhamdulillah.

hmm... Borbus.. I didn't get bits of that hadeeth and.. do you know of it's authenticity? Oh.. and in the hadeeth, does it specifically say 'sayyiduna'?

Shukran.

Assalaamu 'alaikum,

Unfortunately, the page I got it from doesn't have any other information.

If it's the wording at the end of the second paragraph you didn't get, I'm not too sure about it either. I think it's referring to when Yaqoob (as) said he (as) would pray for the forgiveness of his sons, as mentioned in (12:97-98); that is, he (as) would wait until the last third of the night to make du'a because of its virtue.
