Ramadhaan Fever?

September 13, 2005 : 9 Shaban 1426 H

Archived under My Writings , Tazkiyyah .

Bismillaahi was-salaatu was-salaamu 'alaa Rasoolillaah. Wa ba'd

Assalaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullaah.

By Allaah's Permission, those of us still present have reached the month of Sha'baan and we've less than 4 weeks before Ramadhaan is upon us inshaa`Allaah.

It seems that around this time of the Islaamic year the 'webosphere' (yes I did make up that word) is being bombarded with articles about the month of Ramadhaan. That's perfectly fine, but if one truly thinks about this a little deeper, does it not show how 'insignificant ' (I've chosen this word carefully) Ramadhaan is looked upon throughout the rest of the year?

We have twelve (12) months in the Islaamic calender and yet Ramadhaan is the time that we seem to remember:

-- to give charity
-- to speak a good word or remain silent
-- to control one's anger
-- the poor and the needy (depending on the number of rumbles our stomachs make).

Of course, this does not apply to all Muslims, mashaa`Allaah, but for the majority of us (and I'm not excluding myself) Ramadhaan's the time for an 'identity check': we see the khimaars coming out, the putting away of tight jeans, the abandonment of the cigerette... and the list goes on. Again, this is all fine and dandy.

But wait!

Who's given us a guarantee that we'll reach/ see this blessed month? What makes us think that we can wait until then to reform our character?

We are not 'Ramadhaan Muslims' whereby we are nearly perfect for 29 or 30 days, we are Muslims who should aspire to be better than we are during Ramadhaan, inshaa`Allaah. Don't wait to make that change because you never know when Malik-ul-Mawt (the angel of death) will be commanded to take your soul. What then? The wait was of no benefit.

May Allaah make us steadfast upon His Way - guide us to that which is most pleasurable to Him, protect us from all evil within that which He has Created and safeguard us from His Punishment and the torment of the grave, aameen.

Was-salaamu 'alaikum

I'd like to clarify that this post is not contradictory to the many benefits and reminders in the many articles that are being distributed in the webosphere (otherwise known as cyberspace), it is simply a reminder that we should not forget our good deeds outside of Ramadhaan, inshaa`Allaah.

Indeed the benefits reaped from deeds performed during the blessed month is truly great, and with Allaah is all praise, so please do not take this post to mean that Ramadhaan is insignificant. Rather, we make it seem insignificant!

Us-Salaamu'alaikum.

The 9/14 update was much needed, jazaaki Allaahu khairan.

Us-Salaamu'alaikum.

Wa 'alaikumus-salaam.

Wa iyyak.

OFF TOPIC: May I just ask why you say 'us-salaamu 'alaikum' rather than 'as-salaamu 'alaikum'? I've tried to figure it out, but to no avail.

Us-Salaamu'alaikum.

I spell it this way to make it easier for english speakers to realize what it really sounds like. "as" in english sounds like...err "as"...if that makes sense...so when used with salaam, some might still read it like they read a standalone "as". But "us" sounds like "us"...so someone (including some muslims; yes there are muslims who don't even know what words like Allaah and Muhammad really sound like) who has never heard a real muslim (who knows the real pronunciation) say "us-Salaamu'alaikum" would still know what it sounds like and how it is/should be said.

Hope that made sense.

P.S. Sorry if this it's a double post. It didn't show me the "comment withheld" page the first time.

Ah, I see. Mashaa`Allaah it does make sense, it just looks really weird!

[Yes it was a double post. Just to let you know, yourself and other regular trusted commenters are 'whitelisted' so your comments should usually go through immediatley inshaa`Allaah.]

as salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh...

Jazakillah khayran... I've been really down for a long time and your post has made me realise why. I need to get my act together is what it is.

Wa 'alaikumus-salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

Ukht Iman, you know when our eemaan decreases it can sometimes go un-noticed. When we do finally realise that there's a problem (and let's remember that eemaan goes up and down), we should look to our actions. If we feel that we haven't been reciting as much Qur`aan, reading enough tafseer or Islaamic books etc, that may be the reason. Sometimes it may be a sin we've committed which has caused a decrease in our eemaan, especially if it is consistent or... if we have dismissed it without repentance.

Hey, this is a whole new post in and of itself!

May Allaah grant you ease in both worlds, aameen.
