The Losers - 2

November 6, 2004 : 23 Ramadhaan 1425 H

Archived under My Writings , Tazkiyyah .

In the previous installment we mentioned who Allaah was referring to when He said:

"Say: "Shall We tell you the greatest losers in respect of (their) deeds?'' Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life while they thought that they were acquiring good by their deeds." [Soorah al-Kahf: 103-104]

As the tafseer mentions, it not only refers to the disbelievers, but also refers to those who worship Allaah in a way that has not been prescribed. From this point, other issues arise:

1. The importance of following that mentioned in the Qur`aan and authenticated Sunnah, as anything contrary to this tantamount to innovation.

2. Innovations will never be accepted by Allaah, as the aayaat shows, although Muslims have accepted them now.

3. For an action to be accepted, it must:

(a) The intentions while doing the deed must be totally for Allaah's sake
(b) The deed must be performed in accordance to the Sunnah.

'Aaishah narrated: Allaah's Messanger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) said, "If somebody innovates something which is not present in our religion, then that thing will be rejected." [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree]

So those of us that think: "This is going to get me closer to Allaah because it's a good deed", and it's not from the established Sunnah and it wasn't performed by the Sahaabah, the Taabi'oon or the Salaf-us-Saalih, then it will simply not be excepted. These are not my words, but what we've been told in the above hadeeth and the hadeeth that follows:

'Aaishah narrated: Allaah's Messanger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) said, "Whoever performs a (good) deed which we have not ordered (anyone) to do, then that deed will be rejected and will not be accepted." [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree]

So let us return to that which has been authenticated and not that which is weak or fabricated. Let us reflect upon the words in the aayaat above and look to our actions to check whether they have a chance to be accepted. Let us turn to Allaah and ask Him to purify our intentions so that they are solely for Him and let's ask Him to save us from being amongst the mushrikoon.

May Allaah accept our actions and not make us amongst the losers, aameen.
